When you started practicing Bikram Yoga: 2010, then again in 2017
Favorite Posture: My dream is that someday, maybe in a several years, Triangle will be my favorite posture…
Why I Practice
I discovered Bikram in New Orleans in 2010, when I was training for my first marathon. I was running competitively at the time and saw yoga as a great form of cross training. Although I think it helped me run a good race, at the time I didn’t connect mentally with my practice and didn’t continue afterwards.
In 2017 I began practicing again as I was going through a challenging transition. I was facing what seemed like impossible uncertainty in every aspect of my life, and was drawn to the idea of being in a safe space, focusing on the same series of postures, and knowing exactly what to expect.
Since then, my Bikram practice has become a guiding force my life and career. It is teaching me to offer forgiveness, to be generous to those around me, and to be understanding with myself. It is helping me to develop physical and mental strength, which has had a direct impact on my work.
Since beginning practice at Bikram South Pasadena in June, I have had the courage to develop some of my favorite musical collaborations. I have been given amazing opportunities that a year ago I wouldn’t have imagined were possible, including performances and recording with The Eagles, The Temptations, the All-American Rejects, and Demi Lovato. I’m learning how to improve my posture when playing violin, and learning to use breathing to help me focus in performance.
Although is a challenge for me to make myself go to class 99% of the time, I am always happy afterwards, and I feel so grateful to be on this journey and see how I will continue to learn and grow.
